LEVIS FINE ART AUCTIONS & APPRAISALS

a Division of Artbank Incorporated

Levis Fine Art Auctions & Appraisals holds two live auctions and at least four online auctions per year as well as the occasional specialized auction for estates, corporations and galleries. Generally speaking, the live auctions are scheduled for April and November, whereas the online auctions are dispersed throughout the year. The mission of the company is to provide a well catalogued art auction to it's clients from across Canada, the United States and elsewhere.

Doug Levis, the principal behind the company has been involved in the art industry since the early 1970's. He attended the University of Calgary and graduated from the University of Victoria with a degree in Fine Arts, Visual Arts, second degree honours. He returned to Calgary and managed Kensington Fine Art Gallery for five years before doing art consulting work and developing a computer program for the fine art industry. Doug Levis started Artbank Incorporated and was Federally Incorporated in 1986. Since then he has managed another auction company here in Calgary before starting Levis Fine Art Auctions and holding the first auction in 1992. Cheryl Sonley joined the firm in February of 2008 and works side by side with Doug Levis in all aspects of the firm whether it be collecting consignments, art storage, appraisals or consulting.

From that begining, the auction company has seen many fine works and estates pass through the auction rooms. In 2002, Levis Auctions sold Paul Kanes' "Maungwudaus" portrait of an aboriginal man in the mid-1800s at $2.2 million. Still today it remains tied as the third most expensive Canadian painting sold at auction. It's tied with Lawren Harris' "Baffin Island", which sold for $2.2 million in May 2001. Numerous commercial and institutional galleries have also utilized the expertise the company can offer.

At least twice a year, the company sends catalogues and notices for upcoming auctions to over 6,000 names currently on the mailing list. Clients include institutions, corporate collections, commercial galleries and private collectors from across Canada, the United States and overseas. The corporate philosophy regarding e-mail is to have the client's address on the mailing list and send them a brochure in addition to notifing them of web site changes. This way the client has a brochure for reference when it comes to colour accuracy between what has been published on this web site and the brochure in their hands. The front cover of the catalogue is always photographed and included on the web site as a Colour Check

In addition, with over 20,000 items sold since 1992, thirty five years of experience, and various sources and affiliates, appraisals and consulting are a natural consequence to the firm.

We have a dependable storage solution for art collectors, corporations and estates. From single item to a complete collection, you can safely store your artwork at Levis Fine Art Storage Facility.
