Carr and Kurelek paintings are among top sellers at million-dollar Levis Fine Art Auction
An oil painting by Emily Carr called Old and New Forest sold for $257,400 (all prices include buyer's premium of 17%) at our semi-annual auction on Sunday Nov. 8.
It was one of 274 lots sold before a standing room-only audience with bidders from Canada, the United States and Europe.
The afternoon began with Maxwell Bates' Interior with Figures selling for $35,100. By the fall of the afternoon's final hammer, 92% of the 299 lots offered were sold.
Total sales reached $1,070,075; with buyer's premiums added that figure was $1,251,647.75.
The Barn Dance by William Kurelek sold for $198,900, well above its pre-sale estimate of $90,000 to $120,000.
Other highlights of the auction included an oil on canvas by Marion Nicoll called Alberta VII [Winter Morning] which sold for $56,160.
An A.Y. Jackson painting, called St. Fabien, Que., sold for $40,950.
It was one of 27 paintings sold from the estate of philanthropist and humanitarian Dr. Martha Cohen [1920-2015].
Other highlights from the Cohen collection included a W.J. Phillips watercolour called Untitled - Upper Johnson's Canyon which sold for $24,570 and an A.J. Casson oil on canvas board painting called Untitled - Deer along the Madawasku River, Algonquin Park which sold for $26,910.
Between the quality of the art offered and the enthusiasm of the bidding, this was an outstanding auction. We at Levis are grateful to both the consignors and the bidders, without whom we would not have had such success.
